I graduated in medicine from the University of Manchester and undertook further training at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London, obtaining British specialist qualifications in both internal medicine and general surgery.  I later completed my orthopaedic specialist training at the University of BC.  I am a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Physicians of London, and I am certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.  I hold a M.Sc. degree from UBC. I have received the Edouard Samson Award, for outstanding orthopaedic research in Canada.  I undertook post-graduate training in Basel (Switzerland), Oxford (England), and Los Angeles and began practice at the Vancouver General Hospital in major trauma, later focusing on orthopaedic sports injuries.

I am a past president of the Canadian Medical Association and the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the world’s leading academic society in my field.  I was previously Chair of its Research Committee and a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Society of Sports Traumatology.  I chaired five international seminars on arthroscopic surgery and pioneered the introduction and teaching of arthroscopic surgical techniques in Canada.  I am a former VP of the Canadian Orthopaedic Foundation (a national charity), a past Director of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and former Executive member of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society.  For three years, I chaired the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Test Committee in Orthopaedics, responsible for setting the national qualifying exams.  I served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Arthroscopy and on the editorial board of several other journals.

I remain a physician staff member at Vancouver Coastal, and an Honorary Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia.  I have served on many university committees.  For 6 years I chaired the post-graduate orthopaedic academic programme at UBC.  I have been invited as a visiting professor and lecturer at many universities and learned societies, including McGill, Manitoba, Ottawa, N. Carolina, Yale, Cambridge (England), Taipei, Manila, Hong Kong, Madrid, Santiago, Mexico, Athens, Rome, Mumbai, and Sydney.  I have published over 200 articles and book chapters.  I have served as Osler lecturer and as a Board member of the BC Medical Association and, in 2014, I received their Don Rix leadership award.

I have been the medical officer for multiple national and international sports teams and events, including as medical consultant to the Canadian Davis and Federation Cup teams and Olympic teams.  My patients have included CFL, NHL, NBA, NASL, and PGA athletes, soccer players from English Premier League teams, and Olympic medallists from countries as far away as Russia and Australia.  My international patients have included many world-famous celebrities, actors, and dignitaries.  The Globe and Mail placed me in the Power 50 list of Canadians with the influence and desire to affect sport in Canada. In June 2023, in recognition of my international role in the introduction and teaching of advanced techniques for the treatment of sports injuries, I was inducted as a member in the pioneer category into the BC Sports Hall of Fame. I am the first orthopaedic surgeon to receive that honour.

In 2023 I was awarded the title of Fellow by the Royal College of Physicians of London (the specialist society for internists in the UK and the oldest medical society in the world).  This is a very rare honour for a surgeon.

I am the Medical Director of Specialist Referral Clinic and Cambie Surgery Centre.
