About Ultrasound Guided Injections: Shoulder, Hip & Knee

Orthopaedic ultrasound guided injections deliver medication to a specific area of the body to assist in reducing or eliminating pain. With adequate pain relief, patients can more comfortably engage in physiotherapy, perform activities of daily living, and participate in other recreational pursuits. Orthopaedic injections can also serve as a diagnostic tool by helping to localize the source of symptoms.

Commonly injected medications include cortisone or other steroids, hyaluronic acid (such as CINGAL, Durolane, Synvisc). Our surgeons at the Specialist Referral Clinic can discuss with you which of these medications might be most appropriate for your condition.

Administering injection medications in the correct location is obviously of paramount importance to ensure the best chance of a good result. Injections at the Specialist Referral Clinic are therefore offered using ultra-sound guidance. Ultrasound-guided injections are administered in a similar way to traditional injections, however, an ultrasound probe is used to visualize the needle entering the appropriate location during administering of the medication. This can be especially important when injecting expensive medications such as hyaluronic acid.

To find out if injection therapy might be beneficial for your orthopaedic condition, contact the Specialist Referral clinic to book a consultation.

Total Knee & Hip Surgery

As total joint replacements are not approved to be done privately in BC, patients must currently travel to other provinces to access the surgery privately. As a result, the Specialist Referral Clinic is happy to introduce a program for BC residents in need of total joint surgery for the hip or knee only.

Working with Dr. Anthony Costa, BC patients can now have a consultation locally with Dr. Costa at the Specialist Referral Clinic. For convenience, some appointments may be offered virtually. Should you be a candidate and medically fit to travel for surgery, the surgery would occur at a private centre in Alberta. Generally, surgery can be booked within weeks of anaesthetic clearance. For more information regarding this program please contact us and a patient coordinator will be delighted to assist you.
